In today's world, monetizing web video is largely experimental, and it's clear no one can predict which methods will prevail. Adobe understands this challenge and is taking a leadership position to help drive standards for media players. Adobe will provide a standard media player framework, code-named Strobe, to enable the creation and delivery of high-quality, monetized video experiences. Strobe simplifies the development of media players by allowing developers to assemble pluggable components from Adobe and partners in the Adobe® Flash® Platform ecosystem. Content providers and publishers can now focus on the overall user experience of video on their sites and spend less time on the technical details around building media players.
Strobe provides new delivery and monetization options for video distribution. Anyone can develop modules that plug into Strobe media players and enable things like advertising insertion, content delivery and syndication, micropayments, viewer authentication, transaction handling, and business model controls. With an open framework, the future of web video monetization can be developed collaboratively with lower costs and faster turnaround.
The new Strobe framework accelerates momentum for the Flash Platform ecosystem, including the Open Screen Project, an initiative announced in May 2008 and backed by more than 20 industry leaders. The Open Screen Project is dedicated to driving rich Internet experiences across televisions, personal computers, mobile devices, and consumer electronics. By providing open standards around media player development, Adobe is advancing the Open Screen Project and the ability of its participants to further their online media efforts.
